Description
An epithelium-associated glycoprotein found in the cytoplasm and on the cell membrane surface of almost all epithelial cells is recognised by the MOC-31 antibody, often referred to as epithelium-specific antigen/Ep-CAM. Hepatocytes, stomach parietal cells, renal proximal tubular cells, the majority of squamous epithelia, and myoepithelial cells do not contain it. MOC-31 can be utilised as a negative marker for lung cancer or mesothelioma in an antibody panel. According to studies, MOC-31 can be used to differentiate between cholangiocarcinoma and hepatocellular carcinomas as well as tumours of uncertain origin in liver malignancies.
